Derek Clark is an inspiring motivational speaker who shares his amazing life story of redemption at many juvenile justice conferences. He shares strategies on how to connect to grieving youth that have come from a toxic and trauma driven home life. As a child, Derek was abandoned into the San Francisco bay area foster care system for 13 years. He had many behavioral issues stemming from the first 5 years of his life growing up economically impoverished, homeless and surviving brutal child abuse. His life story of resilience and redemption is proof that you cannot think negative about a youth or child and expect a positive outcome. He knows that many of the youth that are in juvie / youth detention centers have suffered from trauma as a child as well as a good portion of their parents have been to prison or jail. Sometimes consequences don’t change youth, relationships change youth. Ask yourself, how many of them have had a positive modeling example or someone to show them what a healthy relationship looks like?
“I just wanted to tell you how much we appreciated you coming to Juvenile Corrections in Nampa, Idaho and speaking to our kids. You made a huge impact on them and on our staff as well. I have never seen our Juveniles be so interested in a speaker EVER and you made so many kids rethink the choices they have been making which in time will create huge changes for them in life. That is not an easy task but you somehow make it seem easy. You truly are a blessing to so many and I hope to get to see you speak again some day. I just wanted to say thank you and let you know how much you are appreciated. I hope all is well with you and your family and thanks again for all you do for future generations. Sincerely, Sheri T.”
“Thank you for sharing your inspiration to Ada County Juvenile Detention Center’s kids tonight. You reached the hearts of some youth that have had many people give up on them. You gave them hope that they too can divorce their story, leave their backpacks of poop at the detention center door and change their habits and their lives. Your message was heard, they listened. The kids definitely received your words in their heads and hearts. Thank you! – Jen W.”
